Bambarakanda Fall – Paradise under the Stars
Bambarakanda is the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. This could be reached by turning off at Kalupahana between the 173rd and 174th km post on the Colombo – Badulla highway. It’s located about 4kms away from the turning point and is easily reached by road. The best period to visit this waterfall is the season between November and February when the feeder river and streams are in spate. Most of the waterfalls in Sri Lanka are highly seasonal. They could be witnessed in all their glory only during the periods of rain. Bambarakanda plunges down a rock precipice 240mts high. The location being highly secluded, it’s a treat to the eyes. Another interesting route to reach this waterfall is down Devils Staircase off Horton Plains, the world famous cloud forest that's a world heritage site. It’s an interesting trek down the mountains through a region some foreign travelers call “The Grand Canyon” of Sri Lanka. The magnificent waterfall is compared to a bridal veil and its well worth a visit. A stay at a home-inn close to the waterfall which allows a fabulous view from its verandah and this makes it an ideal spot for relaxation. The area offers many possibilities for trekking and hiking, and if you have your own camping gear it's just paradise under the stars with the roar of the water in your ears. Another interesting spectacle at this site is the rock formation of a woman under the fall. Seeing a waterfall is not just looking at water thundering down a precipice. Each waterfall has a voice of its own. If you listen carefully you will receive the message that it whispers say the natives. The mountains, the greenery, the scenery, the tranquility and peace only disturbed by the sound of rolling waters will hold you spellbound.
