ARUGAM BAY

Crossing many bridges and causeways you arrive in the town of Batticaloa, the coast-side town with one of the largest lagoons. Don’t miss listen to the music of the singing fish, sitting on the Kalladi Bridge at night. It's just north of the town. At the end of the east coast lies Arugam Bay – that tourist attraction with a very picturesque beach. This is considered one of the best surfing spots on the island. Arugam Bay gets separated by a large lagoon from Pottuvil. It has a wide beach that comes down right up to the point known as crocodile rock. From this point elephants could be seen moving around the edge of the forest. All categories of accommodation could be found around this popular resort. Since the end of terrorist activities in the area, many hoteliers are reaching out to the great holiday spot. Places to stay, from posh hotels to simple beach cabanas, with just coconut palm thatched roofs and walls, are available on the beach.

Here one could just forget the concrete jungles and relax on the golden sand with the boom of the surf in your ears. The largest concentration of elephants in the island next to the world famous “Gathering” at Minneriya, is at close by Lahugala with hundreds of them congregating. During the height of the drought the two major tanks here Mahawewa and Kitulana go dry, leaving behind the luscious green pasture as fodder for the elephants. It’s an ideal location for photographers to capture feeding, mating and fighting giants, on their lenses. If you are one of those daring adventurers you might even get away if you're lucky when an Elepahnt charges you out of the blue when you've inadvertently got too close to a mating pair or some such thing, in which ace you'd beneeding loads of luck. For sun and nature lovers there is no place like Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka. |

It may will be that each of Sri Lanka’s attractions is surpassed somewhere on Earth…
